How do I add engine oil to my Lincoln?

Lincoln recommends checking engine oil monthly for most vehicles. Learn how to properly check and add engine oil to your Lincoln vehicle with these step-by-step instructions.

For additional information about motor oil, check your Owner’s Manual.

Checking the Engine Oil Level

To see the oil level of your motor:

  1. Get a clean, lint-free cloth.
  2. Make sure that your vehicle is on level ground.
  3. Ensure your engine has been off for at least 15 minutes for the oil to drain into the oil pan.

Note: Checking the engine oil too soon or when your vehicle is on uneven ground could result in an inaccurate reading.

  4. Open the hood and find the oil dipstick. It is near the engine and usually has a brightly colored handle. If uncertain, refer to your vehicle's Owner's Manual for the exact location of the dipstick and fill location.
  5. Remove the dipstick and wipe it with a clean, lint-free cloth.
  6. Reinstall the dipstick and make sure it is fully seated.
  7. Remove the dipstick again to check the oil level.
  8. Read both sides of the dipstick and use the lowest oil level as the correct reading.

Note: If the oil level is between “MIN” and “MAX,” you do not need to add oil; you can reinstall the dipstick and close the hood. If it is at or below “MIN,” you will need to add oil now.

  • Do not remove the filler cap when the engine is running.
  • Do not add engine oil when the engine is hot.
  • Failure to follow these instructions could result in personal injury.

To add motor oil:

  1. Clean the area surrounding the engine oil filler cap before you remove it.
  2. Add engine oil that meets your vehicle’s specifications. See the "Capacities and Specifications" section of your vehicle’s Owner’s Manual

    • Add oil in small amounts, and never past the dipstick’s “MAX” level. Too much oil can damage the engine.
    • Do not use supplemental engine oil additives because they are unnecessary and could lead to engine damage that the vehicle warranty may not cover.
  3. Wait a minute for the oil to drain into the pan.
  4. Repeat Step 2 until the dipstick shows oil at or just below the “MAX” mark.
  5. Reinstall the engine oil filler cap. Turn it clockwise until you feel strong resistance.
  6. Soak up any spilled oil with an absorbent cloth.

Note: Your vehicle’s oil level can drop slightly within the normal range between oil changes. However, if it drops to the “MIN” mark or lower between oil changes, you should take the vehicle to your Lincoln Retailer to have it diagnosed.
