Frequently Asked Questions – Wireless Phone Charging

Wireless phone charging allows you to conveniently charge a compatible phone, or phone with compatible charging case, in your vehicle by simply placing the device onto your vehicle’s charging pad. No cable needed.

A list of phones compatible with Lincoln’s wireless phone charger can be found in the Phone Compatibility List Some phones include built-in wireless charging capabilities while others will require a special wireless charging case to be compatible. For example, iPhones (through iPhone 7 and 7 Plus and earlier models) do not include built-in wireless charging capability and require the purchase of a separate wireless charging case; the phone compatibility list includes compatible cases. These parts are sold separately by various electronics vendors and may not be available for all phones.

No, only a single device can be charged at a time.

For phones with built-in wireless charging capability, using a case could affect the efficiency of wireless charging. It might be necessary to remove the phone from the case to begin wireless charging. If a case contains metal materials, the phone may not begin charging and should be removed to charge.

Not all phones will have the same wireless charging performance. Depending on your phone’s design and the version of wireless charging standards it’s certified with, certain factors can influence charging, such as the charging power the phone requests from the wireless charger, metal object detection and shutdown temperature.

Your wireless phone charger can be used when your vehicle’s ignition is turned on, if the vehicle is in accessory mode or if your infotainment system (e.g., SYNC®) is on.

Your phone may buzz or beep because your charging session is briefly interrupted when a door is opened or closed, ignition is started, etc. It will resume charging automatically after these events.

Your phone will determine which charging source to use.

Testing shows that most of the higher quality magnetic strips found in passports and credit cards are unlikely to be damaged. It’s possible that a parking stub may be damaged, depending on its quality. However, this would only happen if the stub was placed directly on the charging surface. As a precaution, we recommend removing all objects from the charging surface before placing your phone on the pad.

Metal objects can affect wireless phone charging performance. Metal or metallic objects including coins, candy wrappers, credit cards, parking tickets, passports, etc., should be removed from the charging pad before placing your phone down.

While coins and/or other metal objects placed in the bin may heat up, the charger has metal object detection built-in which will stop charging if a sufficient amount of metal is placed between the charger and the phone. The wireless phone charger’s ability to detect metal objects varies based on the design of the phone being charged.

Yes. It’s normal for phones to heat up during wireless charging (similar to using a traditional charging cable). As a precaution, some phones have a built-in feature to stop charging or turn off when temperatures get too high. This temperature specification varies from phone to phone.

Place your device with the charging side (typically the back) down on the charging surface. It’s typically best to place it in the middle of the charging surface. Some phones charge better if rotated 180 degrees.

The wireless phone charger is certified to support the Qi* v1.2.2 wireless charging specification. This does not guarantee the wireless charger will work with all wireless charging devices. Not all wireless charging devices on the market are certified by Qi.

Lincoln’s wireless phone charger can support up to 5W of charging power. Actual charging power is determined by the phone.
